When it comes to ants they can be out in abundance because the colonies can be in the hundreds. They are all a part of a colony that is working nonstop to get food for the queen and the rest of the ants. There are some ants that are called a scout that will go out and search for areas that food can be found. This is often times your home and on your property. You want to make sure that you do what you can to keep them from crossing the threshold of your house. Stewart Termite & Pest Control outlines some home remedies to keep ants out of your house this summer.

Mint & Peppermint Oils Repel Ants

One of the things that you can use to help keep ants out of your house is mint. This is a smell that acts as a natural repellent. Ants do not like the smell so anywhere that it is kept they will avoid that area. The great thing is that you can get mint in a few forms. One is that you can use essential oils that are sold at some stores. The oils can be used to soak a cotton ball and set near an area that you are concerned about. You can also choose to have a mint plant that can be placed in a window seal or in front of the house. You want to make sure that you use it near areas that you know ants are most active. This can be a way to keep them out but does not always work because of the many access points that they are able to use.

Lemon Juice Deters Ants

Another home remedy to deter ants is lemon juice. One of the ways that ants are able to make their path is they use a trail of scent. The scent is left by each ant and that is what they use to follow each other. If you are able to break that scent trail you can stop them from being able to follow the trail to your house. The way that you can do that is to use lemon juice that you mix with water. You can use a spray bottle to spread it around the outside of your house. This will kill the scent trail and stop them from getting too close to your house.

Pepper Can Help Get Rid of Ants

Another trick that people use to keep ants way is to use pepper. You can use standard black pepper from your cupboard. Use it to cover around the actual ant hill once you know where it is coming from. The pepper is a great way to send the ants to a new location to start over. That means that they will stay away from the house.
